JOURNAL ENTRY 4

We often type www in our engine search but do we know what is it actually? It is actually stands for World Wide Web. It is a web tool that allows user to enter keywords and find information on websites contained in its databases.

 There are four parts of search engine which are Database to store references to Webpages, Web-Crawlers to find and compile indexes of Web pages, User Interface and Information Retrieval System. 

 Database is a storage where all indexed webpages are stored. It contains only essential information about the webpage and this is where the user's query is matched.

 Web-crawlers or spider is an automated program or bot that 'crawls' all over the webpage collecting information consisting of keywords, titles, synonyms, access frequency and relevancy. The information is indexed and stored in database.

 User interface is a user-friendly site/app where users may input query and search results are presented.

In this post, I will be sharing about The Evolution of CALL. In my previous post, I have shared about what is CALL and the types of them. CALL has been undergone evolution and it is divided into three which are Behaviouristic CALL, Communicative CALL, and Integrated CALL. Behaviouristic CALL is primarily used for Audio-Lingual method and it involves repetitive drilling and practice. The computer is seen as the ultimate aid for teachers in perfecting pronunciation and drill practice. It is aimed to transfer textbooks and worksheets to computer based application. Example of Behaviouristic CALL is The Stanford Model in 1960. The students were required to answer questions by using a teletype coordinated with a tape recorder and answered by listening to the questions and the answers were typed. In this entry, I will be sharing about CALL. It is not CALL literally through the phone as you might think. CALL is an abbreviation for Computer Assisted Language Learning. It usually refers to the area of technology and second language teaching and learning. Basically, it is about learning the second language through a computer. CALL consists of four programs which are CALL-Specific Software, Generic Software, Web-based Learning Programs and CMC. This is just a refreshment for me as I did use CALL in my Material Selection and Adaptation subject during diploma. CALL-Specific Software is designed specifically to facilitate language learning. This type of program is really interactive as it uses language in a very entertaining and enjoyable way. For Generic Software, it is usually referred to applications that are designated for general purposes but co-opted with language teaching and learning.
