USING PODCASTS AND DIGITAL STORYTELLING IN LANGUAGE LEARNING A podcast is an audio or video file and can be broadcast via internet. It can be downloaded to a computer or mobile devices as well.  the term podcast is derived from iPod(Apple portable MP3 player) and broadcast. Podcasts can be listened from the existing one or by creating a new one. By using existing podcasts, it encourages students to find a podcast that interests them and listen to carefully. It varies from different levels and topics. To make a podcast, one should have an audio recording tool, online voice recorder or a smartphone. Editing of the podcast can be used from Audacity or any online audio editor. Then, the podcast can be uploaded to Youtube, SoundCloud, iTunes or even your blog! Basically, CMC or Computer Mediated Communication and ESL is any form of communication  or interaction between or more people via separate computer through network connection. CMC started in the late 1980s and 1990s with the introduction of Communicative CALL. It became widespread with the use of email and forums. During 1990s, internet chat rooms were allowed for direct communications. It is often implemented for long-distance teaching/learning. There are two types of CMC; synchronous CMC and asynchronous CMC. Synchronous CMC is a communication between participants that is synchronised. Messages can be exchanged and replied to immediately. It also allows direct communication such as internet chat rooms and video/audio conferencing. Asynchronous CMC is a communication that is not synchronised. We often type www in our engine search but do we know what is it actually? It is actually stands for World Wide Web. It is a web tool that allows user to enter keywords and find information on websites contained in its databases. There are four parts of search engine which are Database to store references to Webpages, Web-Crawlers to find and compile indexes of Web pages, User Interface and Information Retrieval System.  Database is a storage where all indexed webpages are stored. It contains only essential information about the webpage and this is where the user's query is matched. Web-crawlers or spider is an automated program or bot that 'crawls' all over the webpage collecting information consisting of keywords, titles, synonyms, access frequency and relevancy. The information is indexed and stored in database. User interface is a user-friendly site/app where users may input query and search results are presented.

In this post, I will be sharing about The Evolution of CALL. In my previous post, I have shared about what is CALL and the types of them. CALL has been undergone evolution and it is divided into three which are Behaviouristic CALL, Communicative CALL, and Integrated CALL. Behaviouristic CALL is primarily used for Audio-Lingual method and it involves repetitive drilling and practice. The computer is seen as the ultimate aid for teachers in perfecting pronunciation and drill practice. It is aimed to transfer textbooks and worksheets to computer based application. Example of Behaviouristic CALL is The Stanford Model in 1960. The students were required to answer questions by using a teletype coordinated with a tape recorder and answered by listening to the questions and the answers were typed. In this entry, I will be sharing about CALL. It is not CALL literally through the phone as you might think. CALL is an abbreviation for Computer Assisted Language Learning. It usually refers to the area of technology and second language teaching and learning. Basically, it is about learning the second language through a computer. CALL consists of four programs which are CALL-Specific Software, Generic Software, Web-based Learning Programs and CMC. This is just a refreshment for me as I did use CALL in my Material Selection and Adaptation subject during diploma. CALL-Specific Software is designed specifically to facilitate language learning. This type of program is really interactive as it uses language in a very entertaining and enjoyable way. For Generic Software, it is usually referred to applications that are designated for general purposes but co-opted with language teaching and learning.
